An emergency operation is underway in Rockdale tonight.
About 9.45pm (Sunday 1 May 2016), police and emergency services were called to a fire at a church on Frederick Street, Rockdale.
On arrival, they found the premises well-alight; numerous Fire & Rescue NSW crews and other emergency services are on-scene to deal with the blaze.
A number of adjoining premises – including a nursing home – have been affected by the fire and have been evacuated as a precaution.
Several roads in the area have been closed to traffic and diversions are in place.
Frederick Street is closed in both directions with a 100m exclusion zone surrounding the incident.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area or use local diversions.

It is unknown whether the fire is suspicious at this stage, but crime scene investigators and investigators from Fire & Rescue NSW will examine the scene once it is declared safe.
