EXCURSION TO NEWCASTLE TO HONOR THE LAST AUSTRALIAN FIGHTER OF CRETE!

AHEPA is organising a special trip to Newcastle, in order to honor  Alf Carpenter who is a fighter symbol for the Greeks. 

He belongs to the team of the Australian soldiers who fought in Crete against Germans and he is one of the last Anzacs. (Today is 98 years old)

The excursion and the event have great interest not only for the Greeks, but for the Australians too.

We had the chance to talk with one of the event organisers the journalist Mr George Giakoumidis.

Let’s see what did he say about this event. 

Dimitris Papadopoulos: Mr Giakoumidis AHEPA is organizing an excursion in Newcastle.  What is the reason of this excursion?

George Giakoumidis: The reason for the excursion to Newcastle is that Ahepa wants to honour Mr Alf Carpenter who was one of the last Anzacs who fought in Crete Ellas.

D.P.: Can you give us a few more details for this person?

G.G.: Alf Carpenter is one of the last Veterans who served in Ellas, From March till May 1941, He will be turning 99 years old this year and he wishes to travel to be present for the 75th Anniversary of the battle against the Nazis , in May of this year but is unable to go due to the fact that no Travel insurance will accept him due to his age , although he his a healthy 99 year old, which is truly sad.

D.P.: Your event is very interesting!  Can you tell us a few ore things about the program of the day?

G.G.: The program of the day is that buses will be departing from Rockdale  at approx 7.30am and arriving at Newcastle approx 10.30am
Church Service with Artoklasia at the Holy Apostles Church  Hamilton Newcastle
Followed by morning tea at the Chuch Hall then speeches and Alf will be honored by Ahepa for his services to the War  followed by lunch and entertainment of ethnic dancing .
