THE GREEK WINE RENAISSANCE ARRIVES IN AUSTRALIA

Over 1600 bottles of Greece’s best wines have landed on Australian shores as the country’s leading winemakers and educators plan their return from 19 – 26 June 2017 for a series of trade and consumer events across Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide.

For the third year running, over 14 winemakers from Santorini to the Peloponnese will be joined by Master of Wine Yiannis Karakasis and leading wine educator Grigoris Michailos, who are travelling from Athens to lead the series of Greek wine education events.

This year, the spotlight turns to Santorini with four of the island’s most exciting wineries joining the tour including Argyros Estate, Domaine Sigalas, Santo Wines and newcomer, Artemis Karamolegos.

Also new to this year’s tour is Kechris, whose winemaker, Stelios Kechris, is leading the charge in producing new-age Retsina that is redefining this classic style. The Kechris family have been producing Retsina since 1939 and these days are incorporating a more scientific approach to traditional winemaking methods.

As a growing trend in Greek winemaking, guests can expect to see a diverse range of organic wines on offer from wineries such as Tsantali, Porto Carras, Theopetra Estate and Costa Lazaridi.

Although there has been unprecedented demand for the masterclasses, there is still room at the trade tasting in Sydney on Monday, 19 June at The Establishment, where the wineries will show a huge range of wines including indigenous varieties alongside new-wave wines, offering an opportunity to meet and discuss them with the winemakers.

Other returning favourites include Gentilini, Ktima Pavlidis, Kir Yianni, Mercouri Estate and Skouras.

The topic of 2017’s highly anticipated and most in-depth Greek wine masterclasses to date is Decoding the land of Dionysus.

Yiannis Karakasis MW will lead the masterclasses, taking guests on a discovery of the world’s oldest wine country by looking at native varietals, innovative winemaking practices and never before seen wines in Australia.

The group of winemakers will be visiting Sydney from 19 – 21 June, Adelaide from 21 – 23 June with a special trip to the Barossa on 22 June, and Melbourne from 23 – 26 June.
