Strong magnitude 7.8 earthquake strikes near Christchurch, New Zealand

An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 has struck the South Island of New Zealand, killing two and cutting power to some parts of the country.

The quake triggering a tsunami warning along the entire east coast, which was later downgraded.
