Exclusion zone in place for Yorketown Hazmat incident

A 300m exclusion zone has been put in place around a disused petrol station on Marno Street in Yorketown this morning as authorities handle a hazardous materials incident.

At 2am police were called to the property after reports of suspicious activity.

Police have since arrested two men who have been charged with property damage.  Police will allege the men poured an unknown substance into two underground petrol tanks which are each believed to contain about 200 litres of fuel.

CFS Hazmat teams are handling the hazardous materials incident at this time and people are urged to stay away from the area.

The men from the Yorke Peninsula region, both aged 27 years, have been bailed to appear in the Maitland Court on 10 November.

Police are making enquiries in relation to a third man who police believe was involved in the incident.

It is expected that the exclusion zone will be in place for 48 hours.

Anyone who may have information about the incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or online at https://sa.crimestoppers.com.au
